OSU Heart Program Names First Schottenstein Laureate

Home > News > Article
The Ohio State University Heart and Vascular Center has named Dr. Pascal Goldschmidt, senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, the inaugural recipient of the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein Prize in Cardiovascular Sciences.

The Schottenstein Prize, established with a $2 million gift from philanthropists Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein, will be awarded biennially to an international leader in the clinical sciences of cardiovascular medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, or the basic sciences of molecular or cellular cardiology. With the gift, the Schottenstein Laureate receives an honorarium of at least $100,000. Goldschmidt will receive the award during a ceremony in Columbus Oct. 27.

“Dr. Goldschmidt is an outstanding choice for the first Schottenstein Prize,” says Dr. Thomas Ryan, director of Ohio State’s Heart and Vascular Center. “He has excelled at fundamental cardiovascular research while maintaining a reputation as an outstanding clinician, teacher and administrator.”

Before joining the University of Miami, Goldschmidt was chairman of the department of medicine at Duke University Medical Center, where he previously served as chief of Duke’s division of cardiology. Prior to joining Duke in 2000, Goldschmidt was director of cardiology at Ohio State’s College of Medicine and Public Health from 1997-2000.

A native of Belgium, Goldschmidt received his medical degree from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, and completed residency and fellowship training in Brussels at Erasme Academic Hospital and in the United States at Johns Hopkins University. Following his training at Hopkins, he served as an associate professor in the university’s department of cell biology and anatomy, department of pathology, and division of cardiology in the department of medicine until 1997.

While in Columbus, Goldschmidt will meet with Ohio State College of Medicine faculty members, lecture during a special Grand Rounds in the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital and participate in research day activities at the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute.

Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein are well known for their support of the Ohio State University. Jay serves on the OSU Medical Center External Strategic Planning Committee and as an emeritus member of The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute Foundation Board. Jeanie is a director of The OSU Foundation Board and her work has led to the creation of the Women’s Health Initiative to further develop women’s health research, education and clinical programs.

OSU’s Heart and Vascular Center is a leader in cardiovascular care, translating research discoveries made at the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute into patient care in cardiovascular medicine, vascular surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at the Ross Heart Hospital.
